Langley Burrell Annual Village Fete
Saturday 25th June 2016
Participation in the 2016 fete was excellent, the village and visitors came together to support the community.
The sun managed to shine for most of the time and the rain held off. There was even a fly past by a solo plane from Lyneham. Music was provided by ‘Rollin Back the Years’ and the boys and girls from Langley Fitzurse school made the intricacies of maypole dancing look like child’s play. The school is holding an adult maypole dance class in July – see their website for details www.langleyfitzurse.wilts.sch.uk
There was a range of stalls to keep people busy including tombola, bric a brac, books/DVDs, art and craft with games for all ages Hoop La, Hook a Duck or Bat the Rat. For anyone feeling in need of sustenance; a range of food and drink was available; tea and cake, Pimms with sandwiches and strawberries or burgers/hot dogs and beer not forgetting that important taste of a British summer – Ice Cream.
This year saw the reintroduction of races, initially for the children but expanded, by popular demand, to include adults too.
For animal lovers Frankie the horse offered a chance to ride on his back and ‘man’s best friend’ had his moment in the dog show
The day ended with the Grand Draw, prizes had been very kindly donated by many individuals and businesses.
Now, with thanks to all contributors and supporters, the sights are set on summer 2017
‘Going to Pot’ (with apologies to Fiddler’s Dram)
[one of the fete experiences – held at a later date]
Didn’t we have a lovely time,
the day we went to pott’ry
Plaques and bowls, and things with holes
and all was hosted by Pat, you know
all ages were there. We took great care
as we tried things out with Kathy
having ideas was the hardest part
as the clay did dry.
Moulds could be used, or none at all
just shape your own thought or copy.
Bumble Bees, Green Man with leaves
even numbers for houses, you know
that next time we’ll paint and glaze
to make them, oh so, special.
We raised more for the fete, and cannot wait
for the clay to dry.
So Thank You Pat, and one and all
it couldn’t have happened without you.
It was such great fun, there in the sun
We all got very crafty.
Paint on face and clay up arms
an excuse to get so messy
and what is more, we have things for home
‘cos the clay was used.
Here are the accounts for the 2016 fete – thanks to all who helped put the fete on, and of course everyone who came and spent money and had a great day!
